Coronavirus flew into pipes infecting high rise apartment toilet

The novel coronavirus found in sewage water, faecal matter and urine is known to experts but its spread through pipes remained unexplored

The coronavirus must have been airborne to creep through the pipes and reach an unoccupied apartment in a high rise building.

This is the conclusion by experts who suggest it could only have reached the apartment’s toilet through pipes.

This is according to a study which detected the coronavirus in the empty apartment in China.

Research paper is from Annals of Internal Medicine | Probable Evidence of Fecal Aerosol Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in a High-Rise Building.

The findings of a study, published in the journal Environment International, suggests that the virus could have made its way through drain pipes.

The research was conducted in February this year, where experts detected traces of SARS-CoV-2 on the sink, faucet, and shower handle of a vacant apartment.

Researchers at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention says the contaminated bathroom was directly above the home of five people confirmed a week earlier to have Covid-19.

Nothing suggests that any infected persons had used the apartment, according to reports.

Bloomberg says the new finding is reminiscent of a case at Hong Kong’s Amoy Gardens private housing estate almost two decades ago.

Around 329 residents caught severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, in part because of faulty sewage pipelines in the estate.
